Product Design | Off Book | PBS

We swim in an ocean of products. Behind each one, there is someone (hopefully) thinking about the way we experience it. In this episode of Off Book, we explore three aspects of product design: build quality and engineering fundamentals, humanism and sustainability, and speculation on the future of the product experience. In discussion with the 4th generation owner of a classic brand, a brilliant designer of socially progressive products, and an MIT researcher looking to revolutionize the product experience through 3D printing, we’ll capture a sense of the values and challenges in the contemporary world of product design.

What is design? :

Design is a method to conceptualise what is both beautiful, practical, comfortable, possible and profitable.

The design is a method usually included in the process of research and development (R & D) . This is the design of products, services, systems, taking into account aesthetic, functional, ergonomic, technical and economic. The user experience with the product, service or system is the main concern of the designer.

Other definitions of design:

Discipline for harmonizing the human environment, from the design of everyday objects to the development of sites.
Petit Larousse, before 1989

Discipline for the creation of objects, environments, graphic works, etc.. Both functional and aesthetic requirements and conform to industrial production.
Dictionary, since 1989

Anglicism. Industrial design applied to the search for new forms adapted to their function (for utilitarian objects, furniture, housing in general).
« The design (…) must be the combination of an aesthetic idea of the creator of an industrial reality, a distribution network and tastes of customers.  »(Le Monde, 12.6.1971)
Adj. From a modern and functional aesthetics. Furniture design.
Webster’s dictionary of the French language

« The design has the advantage of serving both purpose and design. Indicates the specific purpose of the industrial object which is that everything is decided in the beginning, at the time of the project, while in the old object made by hand, the project differed running. And drawing out that, in the project, the designer is not concerned with the workings pure engineering business, but only to the provision and shape of bodies in space and time, c that is to say the configuration. «
Encyclopedia Universalis 1990

« Design is a creative activity whose aim is to determine the formal qualities of objects produced industrially. For formal quality, we must not only hear the external qualities, but especially the structural and functional relationships that make the object a cohesive unit. «

Who designs products?

The product designer (industrial designer) is the expert of product design.

What do designers work on to design products?

Designers usually start with consumer insight, that is marketing research. They also consider the competition, technological innovation and tests products themselves.

Is product design a long process?

The process of designing a chair is very different from the process of designing a computer! Every product has its challenges, its time limit, etc. The job of the designer is to cope with change, adapt to situations and make the best product ever.

Definition:

Research and development (often abbreviated « R & D ») is a statistical category, including economic and accounting of all activities undertaken « a systematic basis in order to increase the stock of knowledge, including knowledge of man, culture and society, and the use of this stock of knowledge to devise new applications. «

And how it can serve as a research and development?

Companies in which innovation is activ obtain additional market gains. Why? Because their ways of responding to customer needs will ensure their leading position, visibility in the media and it also creates new types of consumers, loyal to the brand. It is also the R & D that allows to change the methods and procedures of the company: service, production, machinery, administration and personnel management are subjects to improve with the help of a designer and experts in R & D .

I don’t think a true innovation (that is strategic as well as technologic innovation) is necessarily the source of a trend.

But, an innovation which is outside of the trend has less chance of success because it takes more time to educate the public. When an innovation is on the same guideline as a trend, the public is aware and motivated into buying it.

Innovation is rarely the source of trends. The trends are rather cyclical in nature.

For example:

  • Return to 80’s does not depend on innovation, but a desire for many people to rediscover the spirit of « Saturday Night Fever, » with all its absurdity;
  • The store The Bodyshop , despite its innovative spirit, still follows a global trend of returning to nature, environmentalists and values;
  • The success of Foursquare is directly linked to that of mobile and mobility is from a greater tendency to nomadic life, which it dates from a certain spirit of the proper motion work in the city, which conveys the lifestyle  » citizen of the world « , etc..

According to Wikipedia:
Innovation:

Innovation is the result of the action to innovate. This is a change in the thinking process to perform a new share. It differs from an invention or discovery to the extent that it is part of an application perspective.

Trend:

In fashion, a trend is a phenomenon observed on a particular group, a group that is part of another larger group. Often discussed in terms of statistics, a trend is most widely used to guide the production of goods and services.

In the case of an industrial consumer, for example, the only manufacturing quality is not sufficient to guarantee a commercial success: physical appearance, colors are available today meet the tastes of different customer segments, tastes that vary according to the fashion of the time.

A bad design is a design that does not meet the conditions for the problem to solve. This concept is not:

  • Profitable
  • Logic of ecologically
  • Functional
  • Aesthetic
  • Comfortable
  • Realistic according to manufacturing processes

There are sites where you can find designs silly, bad, ugly and absurd. Here are some sites to check on this.
